Today, the first time I've finally headed out of home to meet with friends for a movie. Sk pok and finally, having persuaded dom to watch emily rose, was there as well.
The movie itself was okay, not focusing much on the exorcism aspect of it. The exorcism rites were not oversensationalised, and it focused much on the trial. It lends more importance to the supernatural however, than the medical/scientific facts. It thus, hopes to bring a message to a masses(in my opinion), that the devil exists, God our Father exists, and all of us should walk the right path. Not knowing doesnt mean they don't exist, and that the non believers are just currently blind to what is really out there.

Okay. Now onto debunking the myths.
The real emily rose, or Anneliese Michel, was a German, not an American. She apparently, had suffered from seizures since high school but only had abnormal behaviour in University. Suffering from epilepsy could be a possibility, or of course, she could have really been possessed. She did not eat cockroaches either, but flies, spiders and coal. She also drank her own urine as well. The Catholic Chaplain rejected the pastor's application for the approval for an exorcism as the criteria was really strict. Some of them were : Aversions against religious objects, speaking in languages the person never learned and supernatural powers. They recommended that she(Anneliese) continued her medication. The Bishop, whose approval was needed for the exorcism to go ahead, rejected this as well.
The Pastor Ernst Alt, who was in charge of Anneliese at the time, therefore could only recommend a more religious lifestyle. The attacks on Anneliese however, doesn't stop. Anneliese would break crucifixes, destroy paintings of Jesus and breaks rosaries. She attacked her family members, and as well as commiting self mutilation.
When the Bishop finally approves of the exorcism, there was more than one exorcism rite for Anneliese, and took place from september '75 to july '76. 1 to 2 sessions were held a week. 2 priests were assigned, Father Arnold Renz and Pastor Ernst Alt with the order, to perform "The Great Exorcism" on Anneliese Michel. She had more than 6 individuals within her, of which were Lucifer, Judas Iscariot, Nero, Cain, Hitler and Fleischmann, a disgraced Frankish Priest from the 16th century, and some other "Damned" which manifested themselves through her. There is not one tape. There are 40 over tapes recorded during this period of time to log the possession/exorcism.
Anneliese died of malnutrition and dehydration at the age of 23, not 19. Her body was laid to rest but later exhumed as some people believed that her body would not decay. Of course the result was that it decays, just like what nature dictates.
A short time before this trial as well, the now infamous movie, The Exorcist was released, causing mass paranormal hysteria throughout Europe. It took more than 2 years to bring the case to court, where Anneliese's parents, as well as the 2 exorcists, were the accused. Unlike the movie, all accused were found guilty, and sentenced to 6 months in prison. Not a severe punishment as what others expected of course.
And now comes the question. What do you really believe?
